“There is nothing that looks more like a right-wing misogynist, than a left-wing misogynist” – Mujeres Creando
I will be offering a presentation on the work of Mujeres Creando (Women Creating), an autonomous feminist collective based in La Paz, Bolivia, for my case study during Wednesday night's class. Founded in 1992 by Julieta Paredes, María Galindo, and Mónica Mendoza, the collective approaches personal freedom and social justice through highly visible public action, grassroots activism, and media. Their work serves to expose and dismantle the interconnected systems of sexual and domestic violence, racist anti-indigenous policies, globalization, neoliberalism, heterosexist controlling images and mainstream feminism. Critical of “gender technocrats,” they are most famous for their spraypainted graffiti slogans seen all over the streets of La Paz and Oruco, and their street theater and direct action work, which often involves singing, dancing, elaborate costumes, paint and public ritual. Dedicated to the micropolitical work of daily community involvement, MC ran a café for eight years, and currently operates a collective housing project, offers free day care for children, and runs free classes for women in the evenings. The collective has also produced television and radio programs, an award winning documentary film, and the newspaper Mujer Publica (Public Woman).
