reNEWable times square: an idea

Hi folks. I was in the unfortunate position of having to run errands in Times Square this past week, and every time I'm in that space I'm struck by the wastefulness of it all, especially given Bloomberg's PlaNYC initiative, which has a fairly substantial energy agenda. Turns out, the city (Bloomberg) is planning a serious reconfiguration of Times Square slated to start in 2012 as part of the 'green light midtown' project. In the interim, they've issued a RFP for temporary design treatments for the newish pedestrian blocks of Broadway, called 'reNEWable times square'.

Funny: 'green' and 'renewable' scream energy and sustainability for me, not lounge chairs in the street. Proposals are due April 16. Thought it might be interesting to do something with this disconnect between the Bloomberg administration's emphasis on 'greening New York' and the ridiculous not-green-ness of Times Square. Perhaps we could submit some truly ridiculous proposal, or stage an intervention on April 16.

Putting it out on the table.
